About the Author

Gustave Le Bon (1841 -1931) was a French social psychologist, sociologist, and amateur physicist. He was the author of several works in which he expounded theories of national traits, racial superiority, herd behavior and crowd psychology. His work on crowd psychology became important during the first half of the twentieth century when it was used by media researchers such as Hadley Cantril and Herbert Blumer to describe the reactions of subordinate groups to media.

_The Crowd: A Study of the Popular Mind_ by French social theorist Gustave LeBon is a short treatise on the principles of large gatherings of people. As the disclaimer on the title page notes, the ideas in LeBon’s book were popular at the time of the late 19th century but are no longer in vogue today. The reasons for this are obvious, as LeBon unpretentiously puts to fault all the rhetoric about "democracy," "equality," "fraternity," and "equality" as being mere catchphrases that self-serving demagouges use to control the spirit of the masses. He cites the French Revoloution and the demands of Socialism and Communism during his time. LeBon outlines the way crowds tend to think (in vivid images illogically connected), how they reason (they don’t for all practical purposes), how they express exaggerated emotion, how they are very quick to take action without coherent thought and of the general extreme-conservativism and intolerance of crowds. The individual who becomes part of a crowd tends to loose himself, and feels invincible as he is aware of the similarity of mind and purpose of all those surrounding him. LeBon notes how individuals become unthinking entities of the Herd, and can be unconsciously made to do acts, which can either be of great criminality or heroism. The reasoning of the solitary individual is superior to that of a crowd which has no individuality. All are "equal" in a crowd where, for instance, a mathemetician is caught up in the same spirit as a laborer and class and intelligece differences fall to the lowest common denominator.
There are a number of books that portray financial bubbles and crowd behaviour. This from 1895 is the best one even if it doesn’t specifically touch on the financial markets. The Crowd by the French sociologist Gustave Le Bon covers a number of topics such as how individuals adapt to the group view and suppress their own knowledge, how groups hinder analysis and promote "stories", the way groups make decisions and how they handle persons with a contrary view of events. The points Le Bon makes made huge impressions not only on Sigismund Freud, but also on both Hitler and Mussolini who used them to control the masses.

The Book is divided in three parts. You can leave the third unread. It deals with classifications of different kinds of crowds with examples which very much relate to the 19:th century and also displays a little too much of Le Bon’s fear of socialism. I’m no friend of socialism but this feels dated. The first two parts are at the same time extremely cynical and completely brilliant. Even if the language is old-fashioned it becomes wholly clear for every reader that group psychology hasn’t changed a bit in 115 years. Any study of crowd behaviour should start here.

There are too many interesting topics in the book to cover in a review but one of the important ones is how a collective mind, separated from the individual minds of those constituting the group, forms as the individuals repress traits and knowledge of their own. Temporarily the individual mind could almost be dissolved. As the incorporation in a group is driven by feelings and the very emotional state makes analysis extremely difficult the collective mind is emotionally driven.

Win Your Case: How to Present, Persuade, and Prevail–Every Place, Every Time Audio CD – Abridged, Audiobook, CD
Author: Visit ‘s Gerry Spence Page ID: 1593977328

From Publishers Weekly

Spence’s cowboy Uncle Slim once said, “You can’t get nowhere with a thousand-dollar saddle on a ten-dollar horse.” Noted trial lawyer Spence ( How to Argue and Win Every Time) applies this principle to anyone making a case, whether to a jury, a customer or a boss. Tricks and techniques are the high-priced saddle, he says; more important is the person making the case. Thus his method focuses on “the power of being genuine.” Even fear, he says, can be used to one’s advantage by connecting to the decision maker’s own fear. The book first focuses on preparing for the “war” (as Spence calls every case) by discovering this power in oneself. Then it deals with waging the war: improving one’s storytelling skills, conducting effective opening and closing statements and using witnesses. He makes a persuasive case for his approach, but his advice is often overwrought and overwritten (“Although we are the same in countless ways, we are, nevertheless, as different from one another as a diamond from rubies, which makes each stone unique, beautiful, and valuable”). Spence’s tenets also get lost in his tirade about the injustices of the legal system. It’s clear why Spence wins his cases, but he won’t necessarily win readers over with this volume. (June 8)

Every litigator has heard that you need to tell a story at trial. And most have heard that you need a theme. A lawyer’s credibility is important at trial. More than a few, perhaps, have themselves uttered these lines to themselves and to others. But what does it actually mean, and how are we to do it? Even those who have been to trials, actually stood in the well of the courtroom and even won, often don’t seem to know. "Runaway jury" they will mutter when they lose. Or what about the famous criminal defense attorney who begins his closing with the stirring: "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, the state has not satisfied its burden in this case." Not that he didn’t commit this brutal bloody murder, but that the state has not satisfied some legalistic opaque formula of weighing. Trials often seem to a test of who can do the least bad job — if both sides drone out their scripts of openings, not daring to look over the podium at the jurors then who can tell who’s doing the better job. Why can’t litigators tell their stories convincingly? First, they may not believe their own stories enough. Second, institutional pressures, the "platooning" of responsibilities prevalent in large firms and just simple fear, fear of doing other than the plodding jobs they have seen in court, fear of reaching out and trying to understand the feeling of the decision makers, and their fears may stand in the way. Also, there is ignorance. There are countless ways to do things at trial poorly and a mere handful of people who do them really well. Spence’s book addresses the fear, the ignorance and how to be crdible and why.

Hostage to the Devil

Hostage to the Devil: The Possession and Exorcism of Five Living Americans Hardcover – 1976
Author: Visit ‘s Malachi Martin Page ID: 0883490781

Review

“Martin is above all serious. He is not speaking about madness, about illusions or the irrational, but about the real beyond all reason…. He presents exorcism as … a titanic clash of wills that threatens the lives, the sanity, even the souls of all attending.” (Newsweek)

“Martin’s polished contemporary sense of traditional theology entices even the skeptical…. Stunningly pertinent …Will set you thinking-and thinking-and thinking.” (Detroit News)

“The most shattering book on demonic possession isn’t fiction at all but Malachi Martin’s spellbinding work of interpretive reporting.” (New York (Sunday) Daily News)

“In the barrage of books on possession and exorcism, this is undoubtedly the most authoritative and convincing.” (The Washington Post Book Review)

“Malachi Martin … was the greatest expert on the subject of possession and exorcism in the English speaking world.” (M. Scott Peck, M. D., author of Glimpses of the Devil)

Hostage to the Devil is the first and only textbook on the subject of possession and exorcism in modern times. It is the only work to describe the stages of exorcism and it is obviously based on an enormous amount of personal experience. … a brilliant work.” (M. Scott Peck, M. D., author of Glimpses of the Devil)

Reviewer: Rick (Beijing, China) – See all my reviews

First, a confession: I am on the verge of becoming a member of that nearly lost legion–the reborn Roman Catholic. Second, a minor revelation: this book brought me back to the Faith. Rather than scare the reader into submission to the Will of God, Father Martin stirs one’s dormant and perhaps deeply buried awareness of what is altogether pure and holy and ultimately victorious in the seemingly eternal struggle between Good and Evil. In an age of jaded youth media culture, comedians and pundits who relish in their cynicism, and unabated Hollywood hedonism, it is a breath of fresh air after the rain to read and ponder on Martin’s accounts of personal travail and utter spiritual anguish.

This is not an "easy read;" it requires concentration and an appreciation for intricate prose style. In five lengthy and detailed case studies, written in stirring narrative style, the author carefully chronicles the slow descent of otherwise unusually clever, sensitive, and gifted people into the pit of demonic possession. Father Martin does not sensationalize, nor does he intend to appeal to the reader’s emotions. Nor does he harangue or cajole or attempt to make us feel guilty. Instead, his very sure hand and deft writing leads us to realize that whether we wish to confront it or not, evil and its dark kingdom of demons thrives in this soiled earthly domain, guised and cunning but here nonetheless.

Some have attempted since the untimely death of the author to dismiss him as a fraud or, worse yet, one possessed himself.
Informative and entertaining though this book is, and other reviews cover the formalities, it may hit you on a more personal level than you are prepared for. It did me, take the anecdotal evidence or leave it.

To cut a long story short, there is a chance that, by reading this book, new light will be shed on aspects of your life that you maybe rather wasn’t shed.

You might, as I did, cement a realisation of just how close you have come to the dark one, or something operating in his name, and in doing so, bring to the immediate fore elements that you’d rather not get too acquainted with.

This book, just paper and print though it is, could act as a trigger to strange happenings that will revolve around very personal (and usually undesirable) aspects of your life and your self.

It will not "create" anything new in your life, only make you aware that certain influences already present might actually be something more than you feared and act as a catalyst to escalate certain processes.

Yes, you might be getting "tested" by dark forces and not be entirely aware of it until you read this book and relate the experiences and processes described. Not a nice revelation to have, though perhaps, necessary? The subtlety, complexity, disturbing "realness" and almost boundless reach of Lucifer into your very life and person will make itself known to you in stark and obvious shades of bright light to an extent that is hard to digest. So don’t read this book if you doubt you are ready for such things.
