This is a book to be absorbed slowly.
I don’t think I can summarize this book any better than Friedman himself does on page 1: "It is the thesis of this book that all clergymen and clergywomen, irrespective of faith, are simultaneously involved in three distinct families whose emotional forces interlock: the families within the congregation, our congregations, and our own. Because the emotional process in all of these systems is identical, unresolved issues in any one of them can produce symptoms in the others, and increased understanding of any one creates more effective functioning in all three."
This book will invite you to take a good, hard look at your own functioning. "There is an intrinsic relationship between our capacity to put families together [or, Friedman would also say, to put congregations together] and our ability to put ourselves together" (page 3). Friedman looks at family issues and congregational issues from a systems perspective, arguing that when a member of a family (or a congregation) is demonstrating "symptoms," it is necessary to look at the whole network of relationships that that individual is involved in — because the root cause of the problem may lie in a completely different part of the system.
Friedman illustrates in detail how clergy can positively effect change in a family system or a congregational system. He also (somewhat indirectly) stresses the critical importance for clergy to resolve their own lingering family-of-origin issues. This is not one of those pencil mazes you worked on as a kid. The entire book is one addictive maze. Each page spread is a room leading to other page/rooms. Your goal is to find the shortest route to the center and back while solving the puzzle in the center room–if you can figure out what the puzzle is. But then, each room is a puzzle filled with clues to decipher. Read the text and examine the gorgeous illustrations carefully. Beware–not every clue can be trusted. If you’re an online gamer, consider this a Web site you can carry wherever you go.

I LOVE products of this type. There have been other contest-based mind-bending puzzles that have come out in book or computer-based form in the past.
However, there is a trend with all of them, including Maze.
The publishers and authors fail to support the product after a few years.
If you intend to buy this book, note that it is interesting, intriguing, and quite appealing. However, there are NO answers to be found, in the book or online in an OFFICIAL capacity.
You can find countless sites online where people have "theories" up, mostly involving mathematical matrices, but there is no official site to go to for page-by-page solutions to the puzzle, therefore making any attempt to solve the puzzle a guessing game only.
For instance, if you are on page 26 and are attempting to decide which door to take, you could spend hours, days, weeks or months trying to come up with reasonings as to what door is correct. However, any "answer" you come up with is nothing but a guess. You have no means to verify that indeed, you came up with the right solution to that page. Conversely, if you are stuck and cannot solve a page/puzzle… you can never move on, ending your experience with the book.
I have a Mensa level IQ, and tackle puzzles like this all the time. But without verification of the answers- and this does not mean a simple list of the rooms you should go through, but rather a page-by-page WHY do you go through door X on page Y, you’re frankly wasting your time.
THE BOOK IS AS OF YET UNSOLVED:
Despite the efforts of thousands of people since its publication, this book has yet to be fully solved. At least four chat groups have appeared and disappeared over the years devoted to cracking the puzzles in this book. If you search online you will find the solution to the 16 room path and the hidden message in the center room but that leaves 29 rooms unsolved and many rooms on the 16 room path have puzzles that have yet to be solved. The $10,000 prize originally attached to this book in 1985 went unclaimed for many months. Eventually they distributed the amount to the individuals who were the closest to a solution. Solving a room, or part of a room, can take weeks, but the feeling of satisfaction is huge… "I solved a room of one of the world’s most difficult puzzles!"

I know some people will reject this book because "Psychoanalytic" is in the title. Others will reject this book because "Diagnosis" is in the title. However, this essential text is highly useful to all practitioners of any theoretical orientation if they can get past the negative stereotyping. The term "Diagnosis" as used in this book is in line with the original definition of the word that is derived from Greek- meaning a distinguishing, to perceive, to know thoroughly. The second part of the book title explains that the point of diagnosing is to know how to help. McWilliams clarifies that, "The main object of this book is to enhance practice…" and that is what this book does extremely well.
Nancy McWilliams never looses the person to the diagnosis. "Once I have a good feel for the person, the work is going well, I stop thinking diagnostically and simply immerse myself in the unique relationship that unfolds between me and the client…one can throw away the book and savor individual uniqueness."
Her writing style is much like she describes her therapy sessions. She points out the necessity at times, to judiciously self-disclose. Her personal sharing gives the text a soul and you feel you are with a warm and wise teacher. For example when discussing the value of psychoanalysis, McWilliams discloses, "I share this opinion, having benefited all my adult life from a good early classical analysis.

I know some people will reject this book because "Psychoanalytic" is in the title. Others will reject this book because "Diagnosis" is in the title. However, this essential text is highly useful to all practitioners of any theoretical orientation if they can get past the negative stereotyping. The term "Diagnosis" as used in this book is in line with the original definition of the word that is derived from Greek- meaning a distinguishing, to perceive, to know thoroughly. The second part of the book title explains that the point of diagnosing is to know how to help. McWilliams clarifies that, "The main object of this book is to enhance practice…" and that is what this book does extremely well.
Nancy McWilliams never looses the person to the diagnosis. "Once I have a good feel for the person, the work is going well, I stop thinking diagnostically and simply immerse myself in the unique relationship that unfolds between me and the client…one can throw away the book and savor individual uniqueness."
Her writing style is much like she describes her therapy sessions. She points out the necessity at times, to judiciously self-disclose. Her personal sharing gives the text a soul and you feel you are with a warm and wise teacher. For example when discussing the value of psychoanalysis, McWilliams discloses, "I share this opinion, having benefited all my adult life from a good early classical analysis.

This book has a lot of wonderful information for parents as well as health professionals. We have a child who suffers with chronic nerve pain and have been able to learn how to better help him deal with his pain. There is quite a bit of medical jargon but it is written in a way that anyone can gain valuable information especially with regards to how to talk to a child who is in pain.
Easy and enjoyable to read. Good information for students and parents alike.
The book reads quickly as I have a lot of experience working with kids and know many of the things stated.

Writing reviews when you’ve got other things to do is a sacrifice, but I know that I appreciate thought out ones bc they help me, so I hope this helps others get what they’re looking for. Here goes: I took piano lessons as child, a few as teenager and never made it very far. I can play a few church hymns and primary songs, and nearly any piece I want to as long as I practice long enough. I wanted some music that wouldn’t take me all year to learn, but that sound pretty, and that I can sing along too. I know a big order for a girl who never did her practicing, right?.
I really like this book. Some of the arrangements are prettier piano pieces than others, but I am very satisfied with my purchase. The selection of songs is really good, the lyrics are there and some of the pieces I sat down and nearly played right through, (but they’re not BIG Note So I can play pretty arrangements that hold the melody line and sing along. They are not difficult, but a challenge enough for me on timing and to play through perfectly that its good practice for me too.
